Talent Contest and Singing for Summer Salaries

Talent Contest

Make your way to the Crazy Horse on March 21st at 7 pm for PILF’s first ever student talent contest for Singing for Summer Salaries! Singing for Summer Salaries is an event which raises money for summer fellowships for students in public interest internships.  PILF will be providing free food and non-alcoholic beverages during the event. The talent competition will be very informal, and we encourage all different types of talents to be displayed. Those there supporting their fellow students can make donations of any size in the name of their favorite performance – and the student competitors with the most donations will win prizes from local businesses! All donations the student competitor receives goes towards the professor of their choosing to better their odds for winning the Tuesday event, where they will sing. Invite your friends, make it a social event for you PG group, or make a stop on your way to Bar Review! No matter what brings you out, we can’t wait to see you all there!

Singing for Summer Salaries

Next week, on March 26th, PILF will be hosting the annual Singing for Summer Salaries event. All the proceeds will go to PILF Summer Fellowships, so the more money we raise, the more public interest internships we can fund.  The professor who earns the most money through donations and live bidding will have to perform a song at the end of the lunch hour! You can stop by the PILF table at lunch any time this week and put change in the jar of the professor(s) you would like to see still in the “race” on the 26th.   Help us spread the word about the event, and we’ll see you next week!

 

2013 SUMMER CORPS APPLICATION CLOSES MONDAY, MARCH 18

Summer Corps is an AmeriCorps-funded program that will provide 1L and 2L students with the opportunity to earn a $1,175 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating their summer to a qualifying legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization.

80s Fun Run!

PILF and the Health Law Society have teamed up to host a free 5K run during the law school’s wellness week. The run will be Monday, March 4th from 6-8pm at Bryan Park. It’s 80s themed so dress accordingly! We’ll provide water and some healthy snacks for after the run, as well as prizes for the most spirited runner and the top two finishers. Hope you can make it!

Summer Funding through EJW

Through Equal Justice Works, you can apply for Summer Corps, a program of AmeriCorps, for summer funding.  Please see the info below for more information.  In the past, PILF members have received funding this way!

Aaron Swartz, Internet Activist, Dies

Aaron Swarts, co-founder of Reddit, committed suicide on Friday.  Many are pointing to prosecution “bullying” as a cause.  The event is sad in an of itself, but it also brings to light some interesting questions on the use of prosecutorial discretion. (He was being charged with  ”illegally downloaded millions of journal articles from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the intention of posting them to a file-sharing site,” from JSTOR.)

The 25th Annual Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference

“Collectors, artists, and lawyers”

This article discusses the increase in lawsuits, and threats of lawsuits, over experts authenticating pieces of art.  This has led to experts and foundations ceasing to authenticate works.  According to the Economist:

“All this is bound to hurt sales. Already the top of the art market is suffering, says Véronique Wiesinger, the chief curator at France’s ministry of culture. As scholars grow reluctant to give opinions, forgers find it easier to circulate their wares.”

Some experts have stopped publishing catalogue raisonne, or a comprehensive list of genuine works.  This hurts the industry because, “[s]ales typically increase, sometimes dramatically, upon publication of a catalogue raisonné because buyers like knowing which pieces the artist’s estate or other authorities have declared genuine. If a good new catalogue raisonné of Modigliani drawings were published, sales worldwide would rise by about a fifth, reckons Christophe Van de Weghe, a New York art dealer.”

Should lawyers consider the larger impact of these types of suits? Could waivers be a solution?

Midwest Public Interest Conference Info Session

Not sure how you’ll spend summer, but interested in Public Interest Law? PILF and OCPD’s Kim Bunge want to help on Wednesday, November 14 from 12:30-1:00 in room 121. 

The application process for Midwest Public Interest Law Career Conference (MPILCC) can seem super confusing, but isn’t so bad once you know the basics. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until winter break to think about applications.  A few minutes with PILF will save you hours!

Speaker on Race & Poverty in the American Criminal Justice System
On November 28, at noon in the Moot Court Room of the Mauer School of Law, IU Bloomington, Steve Bright will speak on Race & Poverty in the American Criminal Justice System.  Bright is founder of the Southern Center for Human Rights and a long-time death penalty defense attorney and advocate.
